Open Farms Q&A: Growing fruits and vegetables

Kathy and Josh told us all about growing fruits and vegetables. We talked about where seeds come from and how they turn into plants, how to tell if you have healthy soil and how to make it healthier, how to care for different plants, identifying and dealing with disease and bugs, and the rewards of being a small scale farmer.

Date: Thursday September 17, 2020
Panelists: Josh Suppan, Fat Chance Farmstead and Katherine Rothermel, Kitchen Table Seed House

Note: The introduction of this Q&A Session was not recorded. The Q&A discussion begins following the two farm videos.

Open Farms Q&A: Raising animals

Three farmers shared lots of great information about raising animals. From caring for pigs, cows, chickens, farm dogs, to what animals eat, how many eggs chickens lay, and how bees make honey, we talked about it all and more!

Date: Tuesday September 22, 2020
Panelists: Mark & Becky, Maple Ridge Farm and Xiaobing Shen, Long Road Ecological Farm

Open Farms Q&A: Impacts of eating locally

Three farmers discussed the impacts of eating local food, not just for the operator but for the community as well. We talked about what it takes to get products to market, and how farmers are innovating to tackle big challenges.

Date: Thursday September 24, 2020
Panelists: Sharon Freeman from Freedom Farm, Sarah & Rob from The Rise Farm, Dave Perry from Perry Farm

Open Farms Q&A: What COVID 19 has taught us about local food

Four farmers gave us a better understanding of how the pandemic has impacted their operation and the national, provincial and local food system. The main takeaway? We need more farmers and we need them yesterday!

Date: Tuesday September 29, 2020
Panelists: Andrea, Orrie or Charlie from Sonset Farm, Josh Suppan from Fat Chance Farmstead, Mark & Becky from Maple Ridge Farm, Aric McBay from Root Radical.

Open Farms Q&A: Ask me anything

Anything and everything! Our farmers answered a bunch of questions submitted from very curious and engaged students. We talked about a growth mindset, lessons from high school that help on the farm, crops, dirt, livestock, barns and everything in between!

Date: Thursday October 1, 2020
Panelists: Sarah & Rob from The Rise Farm, Katherine Rothermel from Kitchen Table Seed House, Eric Williams from Patchwork Gardens, Taylor Orser and Gary Gordon from the Frontenac Federation of Agriculture.

Open Farms Q&A: Abattoirs, what are they and what's at stake?

An honest conversation about abattoirs. Our farmers help us understand what they are, how they work, the very important role they play in our local agriculture community, the challenges facing small scale abattoirs and what consumers can do to help.

Date: Tuesday October 6, 2020
Panelists: John Williamson from Frontenac Federation of Agriculture, Sarah & Rob from The Rise Farm and Dave Perry from Perry Farm
